The most beautiful photos of the Red Bull Illume contest

It is probably the most prestigious outdoor sports photo contest on the planet. Every three years, the Red Bull Illume rewards the best photographers. The last edition was again up to the mark.

It's a competition eagerly awaited by outdoor sports enthusiasts and image professionals alike. The Red Bull Illume invites photographers from all over the world to send in their best shots for a chance to win the competition's most prestigious prize, the "Masterpiece by SanDisk Professional" category. And this year, it was American Will Sanders who took the prize, with the shot below of climber Jake Talley descending a gigantic cliff at Indian Creek, Utah.

"I asked Jake to move in such a way as to amplify his fall rather than the traditional descent of the cliff." details the American photographer. "This allowed me to capture a photo that stands out from the usual images of climbing."

The last edition of the contest has again required a lot of work from the jury (composed of 53 experts) who had to select the most beautiful pictures among 41 447 images received from all over the world (the contest is open to amateur and professional photographers). A lot of hard work was needed to sort out the thousands of photos. The Red Bull Illume contest exists since 2006 and was created by the photographer Ulrich Grill. In this article we reveal our selection of the most beautiful images of this last edition.
