Windsurfing celebrates in Marignane for the PWA World Championships

Marignane welcomes from November 12th to 21st the best windsurfers in the world for the final of the PWA World Championship. We Rock Sport will be there.

Slalom, freestyle and wave! These are the disciplines on the programme for the PWA Windsurfing World Championship, which will be held in Marignane near Marseille from November 12 to 21. This is the first time that France will host the competition, where almost 200 competitors are expected to attend.

In 2020, the pro windsurfers had a blank year, just like what Johanne Defay and the WCT surfers also had to suffer last season. And it was a close call for the cancellation of the windsurfing world again. Usually the competition takes place in Sylt, Germany. This year, the North Sea island belatedly gave up hosting it, because the Covid epidemic was still raging in the middle of summer.

The Club Nautique de Marignane, supported by the South region, immediately applied to organise the event. Finally, all disciplines will be present on the Etang de Berre (slalom and freestyle) and the Carro beach (waves). In slalom, it will be the second and last stage of the year (against six normally). In freestyle and waves, these will be the only events of the Championship. The pro windsurfers will therefore put all their hopes on this competition.

Amongst the riders present, we will notably count the presence of the legend Antoine Albeau, the most titled French sportsman in history. Big wave specialist Thomas Traversa will also be present, while the French contingent will be represented by Pierre Mortefond (slalom world champion), Delphine Cousin-Castel (slalom world champion), Marion Mortefond (slalom world vice-champion), Nicolas Goyard (winner of the first slalom stage in 2021) and Antoine Martin, who will be coming from his native Guadeloupe.

Last but not least, the SOMWR 10x Marignane PWA Grand Slam will be organized during the competition and will be part of a virtuous approach as the event promises to generate a positive impact ten times higher than the carbon emissions spent thanks to the planting of mangroves.
