Feel like incorporating some great surfing images into your Instagram feed, but don't know how to choose? No problem, we've put together a selection of five accounts to follow among the world's surfers. You'll be able to make some great discoveries!
#1 : Johanne Defay - France - 158 000 subscribers
Honour to the Frenchies with Johanne Defay, the 27 year old from Reunion Island. A professional surfer committed to the world championship, our Private Sport Shop ambassador impressed as soon as she entered the WCT in 2014. For her first year at the heart of the world's elite women's surfing, she came in 8th place. Enough to earn her the title of "Rookie of the Year". Her best results? A 5th place finish overall in 2016 and 2018, as well as four rounds won (US Open 2015, Fiji Pro 2016, Uluwatu Pro 2018 and Surf Ranch 2021). Before the seventh event of the year, Johanne currently sits in 2nd place in the world rankings.
#2 : Justine Dupont - France - 184 000 subscribers
Let's continue our selection with another tricolore, the big wave surfer Justine Dupont. A few weeks before her 30th birthday, she has just released a documentary entitled "Hell and Heaven". Her numerous titles, including four runner-up world championships in three disciplines and one SUP world champion in 2019, have earned her the reputation of being the most versatile surfer in the world. It's simple, she's considered the best big wave surfer in the world, regularly competing with the men. Jaws, Mavericks, Nazaré, the videos of her prowess never cease to dazzle the planet, reinforcing her reputation each time. Alongside her sporting career, Justine is involved in several eco-responsible projects, with one idea in mind: "to become carbon neutral by the end of her year". You could also find her commenting on the surfing events during the Tokyo Olympics.
#3: Carissa Moore - Hawaii - 499,000 subscribers
Hawaii's Carissa Moore also needs to be one of your new Instagram subscriptions. The reason? A four-time world champion at 28, the young woman is monstrous. Announced as the favorite for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she didn't waver and left decked out in gold. It's simple, this year she only made podiums on the world tour. Forget her slight slump a few years ago, Carissa is in great shape and continues to show it.
#4: Stephanie Gilmore - Australia - 687 000 subscribers
One of them must not have looked too kindly on Carissa's arrival. Stephanie Gilmore had won four consecutive world titles at the time (now seven). The first was the year she joined the tour, becoming the first woman in the history of surfing (men's and women's) to achieve this feat. The 33-year-old Australian is still in the top five this season, proving that she is still one of the best in her class, 14 years after her debut on the tour.
#5: Bethany Hamilton - Hawaii - 2.1 million subscribers
Originally from Hawaii, Bethany Hamilton is by far the most amazing of our selection. At the age of 13, the surfer lost her left arm in a shark attack. Regularly invited to the world championship stages, Bethany took a respectable 3rd place in 2016 on the Fiji Pro despite her handicap. Nothing surprising, or almost, for the one who took only 4 weeks to resume surfing after the tragedy, and four months for the competition. With a strong following, the American is dedicated to helping others, hoping to give them the strength to move forward through her story. Inspiring!
